Be Creative With Magnetic Paint
By Silverspoon Murals

These days there are so many wonderful products that allow you to be very creative with your kids space. If you haven't discovered magnetic paint then let me be the first to tell you what a wonderful invention this is. You can paint just about any surface with it, but let's concentrate on what you can do with all the lovely walls you have in your child's room. I have used this several times for children's theme room projects I have worked on and the results were great. Even if you have limited space in your child's room you can take advantage of magnetic paint. You can turn a plain wall into a child's learning area.

Are you tired of picking up the magnetic letters from your kitchen floor because they keep falling off the refridgerator? Make your kids room a place to have fun while they learn their numbers or the alphabet. Are you just a magnet freak? I love all the great magnet buttons with funny sayings on them, how about giving mommy a place to express herself. You know the fridge is already full of junk all over it! Or is that just my fridge :).

Magentic paint is typically sold in small one quart cans that will cover about 25 square feet of space, which breaks down to a 5 foot by 5 foot square. So keep that in mind when purchasing your product. When you open the can you will find some dull grey looking paint that is rather thick about the consistency of mud. It may be a bit of a struggle to get out of the can initially. Make sure you stir it up well with a paint stick or drill if you have the attachment for it. You can apply the paint with a roller and may need several coats. I always test this with a magnet to make sure that I have a good thinkness of it on the wall. You will find it dries fairly quickly to a dark grey color. But never fear, the paint can be painted over with latex paint and viola! you will have a fantastic magnetic board for your child's room without having to nail anything into the wall.

Things to remember when completing this project: Because of the thickness of the paint if you do have some texture on your wall you will be flattening out that texture because the best surface for magnets to stick on is going to be a flat surface. You may need to sand slightly after application just to smooth out any rough edges. All in all it's an easy project for the do-it-yourselfer. Below I have added a few photos of some magnetic paint mural theme room projects of mine:

This is just a portion of an underwater mural theme room that I painted. As you can see the boat was completely painted with magnetic paint and then latex paint with acrylics were painted on top of it to create the boat and sea horse. Magnetic fish are sticking to the boat all being tutored by my sea horse.

Below you see a lion and squirrel in front of a more typical looking magentic board, You can see the letters all over them. You would think I would have put them in some kind of order or spelled out something clever. Next time!
