Ways To Make A Breezeway More Than Just A Place For Shoes And Coats
By Jessica Ackerman

A room that separates a garage from the rest of a home is commonly referred to as a breezeway, but a breezeway can be far more than a place to store mounds of shoes and outdoor gear. A breezeway can be a stylish and impressive part of the home, and with a little creativity and decorating ingenuity it can be far more than a place to store shoes, coats, and other items that should be in a closet. You can turn your breezeway into a room for displaying collectibles, and it can look just as stylish and decorative as the rest of your home.

Contain the Shoes

Instead of letting shoes pile up near the door, consider buying a wooden bench that doubles as a storage container. A wooden bench will provide a place to store shoes underneath, and it will also provide a place to sit down when putting on and taking off shoes. Many benches also offer a hinged seat with storage for winter gear, and these pieces of practical furniture look as decorative as they are useful.

A Wardrobe for Coats

If your breezeway does not have a closet, consider buying a freestanding wardrobe especially for coats and outerwear. Many wardrobes have an upper shelf, and if a wooden bench with added storage does not offer enough room, use the shelf for additional storage. Coats can be hung up immediately upon entering the breezeway, and cleaning up and organizing is necessary before decorating any room in the home.

Wrought Iron Decor

Wrought iron decor is a fantastic choice for any room, even the breezeway. It makes the room seem more like an integral part of the home instead of just a place to kick off dirty shoes and toss aside outerwear. Turn your breezeway into a living area instead of just a mudroom, and have fun adding wrought iron decor or other wall decorations that will make the breezeway a stylish part of the home.

A Framed Mirror

Breezeways are generally smaller than other rooms in the home, and even with windows they sometimes appear inadequate. If you want to make the breezeway seem larger than it truly is, add a decorative framed mirror or two. Mirrors make a room seem larger because they reflect all sources of light, and well placed framed mirrors will decorate the space while making it appear larger than ever.

Place Marquees Above Doorways

A cast resin marquee adds drama and style to a room, and along with wrought iron wall décor, consider placing cast resin marquees above the doors. A cast resin marquee would also look impressive as part of the focal point in the room. Marquees also add dimension and design above windows, and they can be used in many decorative ways throughout the home.

Take a look at the numerous options for wall decor, and choose items that best match your style and preference. A breezeway can be more than just a place to stash shoes and coats. It can be a stylish part of your home, and with a little organization and interesting wall decor, it can look just as impressive as the rest of the home.
